In the fall of 1977, Tony took over the boys' soccer program at H.G. Hoffman High School. Over the next 50 seasons, he built far more than a successful soccer program—he built a legacy.
Through the victories and the challenges, the championship runs and the rebuilding years, one thing never changed: Tony led every team with passion, commitment, and an unwavering love for the beautiful game.
But his greatest impact was never measured only by wins and losses. It was measured by the countless young men he coached, the lessons he taught, and the lives he touched along the way.
For five decades, Tony has been more than a coach. He has been a mentor, a role model, and a constant source of inspiration for generations of South Amboy student-athletes.
In the spring of 2026, I realized that Tony G was about to begin his 50th season as the head coach of the South Amboy High School (formerly H.G. Hoffman High School) boys' soccer team. You don't need Google to know that's an extraordinary accomplishment.
I had the privilege of being a member of Tony's very first team back in the fall of 1977.
It's impossible to overstate the impact Tony has had on my life. He introduced me to a sport that has shaped both my personal and professional life for nearly 50 years. But his influence went far beyond soccer. He taught me how to overcome adversity with resilience and optimism. His enthusiasm for life and genuine love for people is contagious. Because of Tony, I developed a passion for travel, pursued college tennis, discovered an appreciation for photography, and embraced countless other opportunities I might never have explored. Most importantly, I am proud to call him my friend.
Along with two of my former teammates, John Dragotta and Bill Lewis, we discussed the idea and immediately began planning a celebration worthy of this incredible milestone.
As our conversations continued, we realized we could do something even more meaningful.
A party lasts only a few hours. People gather, laugh, reminisce, and then head home. But a legacy can last forever.
That's when the idea for the Tony G Legacy Scholarship was born. Instead of simply celebrating Tony's remarkable career, we wanted to create something that would continue his impact on future generations of South Amboy student-athletes.
On October 24, 2026, we'll celebrate Tony's incredible 50-year coaching legacy with a night of memories, laughter, and friendship—but more importantly, we'll launch a scholarship that will ensure his influence continues for years to come.
We hope you'll join us in celebrating an extraordinary coach, an extraordinary mentor, and an extraordinary man.
50 Years of Service.....and Memories
An endowed scholarship is a simple idea with a lasting impact.
Together, we raise a fund—whether it's $15,000, $25,000, or even more. That money is invested, and each year the earnings are used to award scholarships to deserving South Amboy High School student-athletes. The principal remains intact, allowing the scholarship to continue year after year, generation after generation.
For example, a $25,000 endowed scholarship can generate approximately $1,250 in scholarships every year—not just once, but forever. That's the power of an endowment: your generosity today becomes an investment in students for decades to come.
The Tony G Legacy Scholarship is being established in partnership with the Rotary Club of South Amboy/Sayreville, whose 501(c)(3) charitable status allows all eligible donations and contributions to be tax-deductible.
Just as important, 100% of the net proceeds from this effort will be deposited into the scholarship endowment and used exclusively to support future scholarships. This is an entirely volunteer-driven initiative. No one receives compensation. Every dollar possible goes toward building Tony's legacy and helping deserving South Amboy students pursue their dreams.
